"The PREPAIR LIFE project aims to implement actions in the Po Valley territory and Slovenia in order to improve air quality and comply with European policy. Domestic biomass combustion is a large source of air pollutants in our region. We therefore implement capacity building actions, such as training on the correct use of woody biomass and training for a correct maintenance. Networking with other LIFE projects like Clean Heat is crucial to exchange experiences and transfer knowledge."

Alberto Suppa, Regione Lombardia, LIFE PREPAIR

"In Slovenia, 45% of people live in areas with excessive air pollution, which is mainly caused by private wood burning. With support by Clean Heat, Focus provided policy recommendations for the National Air Pollution Programme. Additional measures are crucial to reach the PM2.5 reduction targets. Providing opportunities to finance the replacement of heating systems and improved building efficiency, especially in energy-poor households, are key measures in Slovenia."

Dr. Tomislav Tkalec, Focus (Association for Sustainable Development)

"It is often assumed that wood burning is only relevant issue in northern countries, but there are regions in Italy, for example the Lombardy, where domestic combustion accounts for more than 50% of PM2.5 emissions. Heating with wood and pellets is often seen as a sustainable and climate friendly way of heating, unfortunately it is not. Wood burning produces hugh amounts of particulate matter as well as benzo(a)pyrene, which is carcinogenic to humans and black carbon, which is a very powerful climate forcer."

"In Slovakia, fine particles and black carbon are mainly from residential burning, based on official monitoring over 85%! The discussion during the Clean Heat workshop in Bratislava identified a number of levers to solve the problem: Better education & training, strong information campaign, proper implementation, motivation instruments for good/best practice heating, effective controls as well as adequate funding for building insulation and low-emission heating appliances are crucial to tackle the issue."

"Air pollution is the top environmental threat to health in Europe. There is a large body of evidence demonstrating the many health harms from breathing in polluted air, which was also presented by renowned health experts in a joint workshop between HEAL and the Clean Heat project. We call for the updating of EU air quality standards to reflect the latest health evidence."

Anne Stauffer, Director for Strategy and Campaigns, Health and Environment Alliance (HEAL)

"The Alliance for Green Heat was extremely pleased to see a eco-label that required automated air control as we believe that represents the next big step in cleaner stick wood heating technology.  We have hosted Wood Stove Design Challenges in the United States that promoted automated stove design and several European teams competed and won awards.  But to date we have no eco-label due to opposition from some key players.  We applaud Blue Angel for recognizing and rewarding this new class of wood heater."

John Ackerly, Alliance for Green Heat (USA), on the Blue Angel eco-label initiated by Clean Heat

"Domestic heating, mainly with wood, is the major source of air quality problems in Bulgaria. The most worrying is not only the high amount of solid fuels used for heating, but their poor quality and that most households use stoves with very low efficiency. Therefore we are happy to have the short film and exhibition from Clean Heat to raise public awareness."

Ivaylo Popov, Za Zemiata (Friends of the Earth Bulgaria)

"In Bulgaria and many other Eastern European countries, air quality and energy poverty are closely linked: low-income households cannot afford to change the old and inefficient heating equipment or replace the poor quality heating fuels. In cooperation with Clean Heat, our project InventAir addressed the problem by assessing the different aspects of energy poverty as well as transfering know-how and experience to develop municipal woodstove changeout roadmaps as effective policy tools."

Ina Karova, Energy Agency of Plovdiv (EAP) / InventAir project

"Standards that represent real-life conditions of product use are crucial in providing accurate information to the consumer and in fostering environmentally-friendly purchasing decisions. Thus, we endorse Clean Heat's initiative for a new ecolabel for firewood stoves that can serve as a blueprint for the development of European standards. ECOS strives to bring the perspective of environmental NGOs into the standardisation process and advocates for a more representative measurement method for stoves."

Melissa Zill, European Environmental Citizens'Organisation for Standardisation (ECOS)

"Every year, more than 10.000 people die prematurely in Czech Republic due to fine particles. Thus, we really appreciated Clean Heat's support to organize press and information activities as well as events on residential burning. Although stricter requirements for appliances are necessary, it is even more important to implement and control them in an effective way."

Miroslav Suta, Centrum pro životní prostředí a zdraví

"Biomass burning and related emissions of short-lived climate pollutants such as black carbon have a huge impact on the climate. In order to tackle air quality and climate change through an integrated approach, many state partners, IGOs and NGOs have joined forces in the CCAC. But emissions from residential burning are not only a crucial issue in developing countries: also in Europe, black carbon emissions of stoves and boilers have to be reduced further to meet the 1.5˚C target."

Yekbun Gurgoz, Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC)

"Cooperation with other European projects is a source of valuable experience for us. Life Project Clean Heat, just like our LIFE Project 'Malopolska in a healthy atmosphere', support environmental improvement strategies .We often used LIFE Projects Clean Heat information materials to for education and raising awareness of the inhabitants of Malopolska Region. Moreover the prepared materials had high substantive quality. Team, which implemented the project, showed professional knowledge involves environmental protection. We are pleased to cooperate with Clean Heat - we are sure that their activities have contributed to improve air protection."

Katarzyna Stadnik, LIFE Małopolska

Peter Neisecke, Landratsamt Bodenseekreis

"Thanks to campaigns like the Clean Heat project, more and more people understand that household heating is an important source of harmful air pollution. The scientific evidence is clear - more needs to be done and that's why the EEB actively supports this work at the EU level and through our members in other European countries."

Margherita Tolotto, European Environmental Bureau (EEB)

“Air pollution in Hungary is mainly due to residential heating and burning. Household incineration of waste is widespread, many people are heating with highly polluting lignite or wood with high water content. Strengthening the relevant authorities is one of the key tools for eliminating this phenomenon because they are currently unable to enforce existing legislation. An efficient awareness-raising campaign is also indispensable. The cooperation with Clean Heat enabled us to exchange experiences in two conferences and build up awareness-raising activities with press and social media work, the translated exhibition, background information, and short film."

András Lukács, Levegő Munkacsoport (Clean Air Action Group)

"It is great that the Clean Heat project over the last four years had press success to underline that wood burning in Denmark is the largest source of air pollution with extremely toxic substances."

Solveig Czeskleba-Dupont, Founder of the National Association for Information on Wood Stove Pollution

"Poland has been failing to meet EU pollution limits for years. Domestic heating, which is mainly coal-based in Poland, is causing high particulate matter pollution. Regulations like the Krakow solid fuel-ban, can serve as a best practice example in extremely polluted regions. But there's still lack of consistency at the national level with regards to air quality policies. Coal still remains the main source of energy for households. Solid fuels standards are very weak and not effective. Standards for stoves only apply to new devices. Workshops like the Clean Heat event in Krakow are very valuable for knowledge sharing so we can find ways to secure better air quality to protect human health."

Agnieszka Warso-Buchanan, ClientEarth Clean Air Lawyer

"Asthma-Allergy Denmark believes that clean air – like clean water – should be available for everybody at a quality not making people sick from breathing. In that content, focus on air pollution from wood burning is important for our members and everyone else. On that background we support the Clean Heat project."

Thorkil Kjær, Director, Asthma-Allergy Denmark
